Erzya chief elder informes Estonian minister on the challenges faced by Erzya delegation.<\/span><\/p><\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n<\/span>

<\/span>\u201cAt\u00e4\u0144 Ezemes <\/span>(erz.<\/span> Council of elders)<\/span> of Erzya people elected their delegates to the Congress as early as January 2020,<\/span> and <\/span>further informed<\/a><\/span> Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples about these decisions.<\/span> Just to get any feedback from the Committee we were compelled to make repeated phone calls to Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples and Fenno-Ugria Foundation as well as to send repeated requests in written form.<\/span> And so,<\/span> when in April of this year Assosiation of Fino-Ugric Peoples of Russia <\/span>(AFUN)<\/span> made another politically motivated demarche,<\/span> we were finally informed on the matter.<\/span> They said,<\/span> that Erzya delegation should contact with <\/span>\u201crepresantatives of Mordovian people\u201d<\/span>, namely Nikolai Khramov,<\/span> ex-Deputy Minister of culture and tourism in Russian government,<\/span> and Mikhail Yakunchev,<\/span> a member of AFUN Presidency\u201d<\/span>, <\/span>–<\/span> Syre\u015b Bol\u00e4e\u0144 resents by the response.<\/span><\/p><\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n<\/span>

    Erzyans asked Eva-Maria Liimets,<\/span> Estonian foreign minister,<\/span> to ascertain the exact formal status of Erzya delegation at VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples,<\/span> to inform about any formal restrictions to visit Estonia by any member of Erzya delegation,<\/span> to facilitate with consultations on procedural issues necessary for proper registration.<\/span><\/p><\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n<\/span>

    <\/span>\u00abIn my view the Congress is the place to gather delegates of national representative bodies,<\/span> public activists,<\/span> community leaders.<\/span> This is the site to discuss problems and challenges we face together,<\/span> this is the place to share our experience.<\/span> According to Russian officials and bureaucrats it\u2019s everything and always OK,<\/span> it\u2019s nothing to worry about.<\/span> They say that discussion on any problems is necessarily <\/span>\u201cpolitization\u201d<\/span> and <\/span>\u201chand of Washington\u201d<\/span>. These Russian officials don\u2019t need the Congress as a place to deliver a speech,<\/span> they have enough other locations for that.<\/span> Their speeches are practically identical,<\/span> we have heard these dozens of times.<\/span> I understand that Estonian foreign affairs ministry doesn\u2019t organize VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples.<\/span> However Congress is a respectable international event passing on territory of Estonia.<\/span> The Estonian State is a receiving party.<\/span> In the conditions when the Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples redirects Erzya delegation to Mordovian officials under direct control of Moscow,<\/span> I can see the only effective solution,<\/span> namely to apply directly to MFA of Estonia.<\/span> I made an effort to explain to Madame Minister,<\/span> that Council of elders is accountable to Erzya people,<\/span> and we do not coordinate our decisions neither with the ministry of culture of Republic of Mordovia nor with AFUN.<\/span> We are asking not to send us in such places&<\/span>#8221;<\/span>, <\/span>—<\/span> Erzya Inyazor comments.<\/span><\/p><\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n<\/span>

    In April 2021 Assosiation of Fino-Ugric Peoples of Russia <\/span>(AFUN)<\/span> had officially withdrawn from participation in VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples.<\/span> AFUN accused Congress of politicizing and <\/span>\u201cplaying a finno-ugric card\u201d<\/span> to put pressure on Russia.<\/span><\/p><\/span>\n
